The Department of Archaeology Collections

Archaeological collections of the National Museum in Belgrade are classified according to their chronology. Objects of material culture are used for research of and learning about the ways of life in the following periods and cultures: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, the Bronze and the Iron Ages, cultures of the Classical Greece, Hellenism and the Ancient Rome, and include the first centuries of the Christian era, ending with the Great Migration. The Museum acquires objects by means of donations and gifts, acquisitions and numerous archaeological excavations, which are hosted or visited by the National Museum experts. read more ...

The Department of Mediaeval Art

The Department of Mediaeval Art of the National Museum in Belgrade preserves artifacts and objects created in Serbia, Byzantine Empire and other parts of the mediaeval orthodox realm between the seventh and the sixteenth century A.D. The Collection contains a number of representative pieces, which belong to the mainstream of the Serbian and Byzantine mediaeval art, and often originate from the churches and monasteries built and furnished by mediaeval rulers and top clergy of the Orthodox Church. read more ...

The Department of the Post-mediaeval and Modern Art

The Department’s rich Collections contain various objets d`art of both national and international schools of art. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphics display a wide-ranging outline of the artistic production on the territory of Serbia between the eighteenth and the twentieth century. They include significant works of mainly European provenance dating from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. The National Museum in Belgrade was the first cultural institution in the world to include a Piet Mondrian painting in its permanent exhibition. read more ...

The Department of the Numismatics

Guided by a clear-cut developing concept, the National Museum in Belgrade has, over a long period of time, collected, purchased or otherwise acquired and studied numerous objects today forming its famous Numismatic Collection. The Collection counts over 300,000 examples of coins, medals, seals and emblems that can be dated in historic periods stretching from the antiquity to modern times. The objects included in this collection had chiefly originated in this region. The Collection is systematically divided into sub-collections, among which are the following ones: the Ancient Greek, the Barbarian, the Roman, the Late-antiquity, the Byzantine, the Medieval and the Collection of Contemporary Coins, as well as the Collection of Medals, Emblems and Seals. read more ...
