Welcome

Welcome

Museums had been cabinets of rarities, cultural archives of society, cathedrals of art, shrines of past; today besides their main function in protection of heritage they also have the role of academic institution, atelier, library or school. They developed into places of amusement and pleasure, places of rest, places for dreaming but also places for critic and dialogue.

National Museum in Belgrade since its foundation in 1844 underwent many changes in the same way as its social, cultural, political and economic environment changed. Yet, the museum was mostly changed by individuals, who working in it always knew that contemporainity is one of its most attractive tasks. But also the most difficult.

Information that we offer on our pages will help you to get acquainted with richness and significance of our collections, main museum activities, ambitious plans. We also wish the focus of changes to be our visitors, your pleasure and interests.

Dr Tatjana Cvjetićanin
Director of National Museum in Belgrade
